Conclusion

This survey assessed people's knowledge of sediment diversions, and their potential to restore the coast. We found that the survey results did not support the first half of the alternative hypothesis, because 79% of people agreed that sediment diversions were the most feasible way to restore the coast. However, the results did support the second half of our alternative hypothesis, because a cross tabulation, with a p-value of 0.95, showed that there was a relationship between respondents that had lived in Louisiana for 4 or more generations and the idea that sediment diversions will help to save the coast.

These results show that more public information about sediment diversions can potentially help move the public towards a more supportive mentality on sediment diversions. The results show that the longer a person has lived here, the more in favor they are of sediment diversions. Ideally this would be because they have seen the changes to Louisiana’s coast take place over the course of the last 100 years, and are ready to make changes to ensure that our coast will live on for future generations.
